Yesterday's Wine

George Jones. Do I really need to say more? This is the man who drove his lawn mower to the liquor store because his wife hid the keys to his car so he wouldn't, well, drive to the liquor store. That's dedication, my friends.

'Course, old George is a Country legend whose range runs far and wide topically. And we give all due respect to The Possum. But this is Barstool Mountain, so we're interested in his more consumptive nature.

Jones placed 3 songs on the Top 100 Drinking Songs list ("White Lightning", "If Drinking Don't Kill Me..", and "The King Is Gone"). Since this round is, as always, on the house, we're gonna pour you a few more shots of George Jones inebriation to go along with your chasers. Or call it a Little Kings 8-pack.

Cheers!

Love George Jones, simply one of the great male voices of all time, but I've got to say he is a man who barely seems in control of his genius and has, thus, recorded some real stinkers e.g. Im A People.I regret to say for me The King Is Gone falls squarely into the stinker camp.

I'm with you all the way, Testify. It's cute, but ... cute does not make a great song. Yadda-dabba-do!

So what? Every great artist is entitled to a few misses. The body of work is what counts, and George is definitely in the Pantheon. Thanks Bigrock!

I have to disagree with you guys about The King Is Gone. It's not high art but it's pretty damn funny: "I screwed the head off Elvis, filled Fred up to his Pelvis." C'mon! That's some kind of genius...

Thanks so much for all of these beauties! This is as good as it gets. Mind you, I've got it cranked on my computer in the garage while I'm trying to fire up my tractor. Think I'll head on out and by me another deck of smokes...

Man, I loooovve "The King Is Gone," I consider it one of the great underrated songs of all-time. As a kid in the 80's, I only knew mainstream country music ala Alabama, that I considered square, sanctimonious crap. Then I randomly heard the "King Is Gone" on college radio, and was introduced to the idea of country as having humor, irony, wickedness. I realized country could be punk.

The way I heard it, ol' George had attached to the back of his lawnmower a cardboard license plate with "POSSUM1" inscribed in black magic marker.

Sweet! A knock down drag out over "The King Is Gone". I think to fully appreciate the song, you really have to be fully in yr cups, propped precariously on yr barstool. Try the "Yabba dabba doo" line then, and I think you'll be able to realize the sheer drunken brilliance of the tune. Aren't most drinking songs dangerously close to "novelty" by nature? That's not to belittle the drinking song, for god's sake (it's our bread and butter), but the songs do tend to serve a specific purpose. A mighty noble purpose, too.

Thanks for your comments!

Hey, it's not "White Lightning" but then what is?

It's charms sure aren't diminished after a few pulls on the bottle.
